Any advantage to using oak powder versus other oak alternatives?

Oak powder has a few advantages over the alternatives.  As a rule, oak powder interacts with the wine the most due to its greater surface area exposed to the wine.  This increased surface area means that less powder needs to be used to impart the flavor and aroma desired.  Further, oak powder imparts its flavor/aromas at a faster rate than the alternatives.  On the other hand, one must be careful not to use too much powder as it can be easily overdone.
