Are carboys used for different things than growlers, or are they just larger versions of growlers?

Carboys are primarily used for fermenting and are very difficult to carry, they are usually 5 or 6 gallons and made of glass or oxygen barrier plastic. Growlers are made for the finished product, usually glass or aluminum and typically around 2 liters in size.

for carboys you can get away with simple buckets or drums for fermentation. for storage you should always try to eliminate as much air surface as possible
