Cross flow is expensive but it is popular in facilities where less or no earth filtration is desired. Cross flow systems cannot handle bentonite lees and other clogging solids very well and it is important to get the wine as clear and stable as possible before using a cross flow to filter.

Although cross-flow filtration systems are often costlier than traditional filtration systems, they offer a number of benefits that can both save money over time and give the operator more control over the process.

Cross-flow filtration is often preferable for wine because the liquid has a high proportion of very small particles. In this process, the wine passes over the filter rather than through it, meaning there is less residue left behind and significantly less clean-up involved. Cross-flow filtered wine also tends to be clearer and have a cleaner appearance than traditionally filtered wine, and can make the final product look more appealing.
