Case packing is usually automated when the pay back for label savings and reduction of ergonomic issues outweighs the cost of the equipment.
There are semi-automatic and automatic case packing options. Many co-packers with lots of SKUs often choose semi-automatic systems. We have supplied automatic systems for speeds of 5 cases per minute and higher.

Case packing makes sense when you can achieve an 18 to 24 month total return on investment. That includes all the labor, time off and many other variables. Some times it makes sense simply because the line speed is so fast that you cannot throw enough labor at it. We can offer a very simple ROI calculator if you would like, contact us.
