For pressing Zinfandel for red wine, a membrane press is generally recommended unless the costs are prohibitive. Zinfandel grapes grow in large, tight clusters, and though they are a relatively thin-skinned variety, the clusters reduce expected yields.

Though basket presses have come back into fashion in recent years, they are not recommended for Zinfandel, as the press is already low yield and will struggle with breaking the pockets of grapes located in the middle of the cluster. If re-pressed to obtain better yields, the winemaker will also run into issues of stray skin.

For Zinfandel, a membrane press will produce best results.
