Coffee stouts are extremely popular these days, and there are a variety of ways with which to add coffee to your stout (no matter what method you use, avoid adding the coffee during the boil).

If you'd like to add coffee to the kettle, add the coffee in hops bags and put them in at knockout. Leave them soaking in hot wort for several minutes, then remove them.

Alternatively, you can add coffee later (secondary or at the bottling stage) to avoid fermentation with the coffee infused. Fermentation releases carbon dioxide, which can affect the coffee aroma in your beer. If you'd prefer not to go through fermentation with the coffee already infused, then prepare coffee separately, cool it, then add it to the carboy or bottling bucket.
