I want to automate my pump over process (small winery). What's a good, cheap option?

Two great options are flexible impeller pumps and air diaphragm pumps. They are relatively gentle (which suits the pump over process -- you don't want the pump to shear the solids and release bitter, unwanted flavors), they are relatively inexpensive compared to other must pumps, and they are both quite versatile (allowing for use in a variety of situations, not just pump over). Either of the two is a great choice, however, if you are doing a pump over, some wineries do have a slight preference for the suction power of flexible impeller pumps. Alternatively, some wineries report that air diaphragm pumps are gentler on the solids (pulp, skin, and seeds). Which you choose will mostly be up to preference. Speak with a supplier to get more specific recommendations!

John McGinn from McFinn Technologies-US-FIP

All US-FIP pumps are equipped with Variable Frequency drives which can readily receive a signal (4-20ma or 1-10vdc) from a timer or other device to automatically turn the pump on and off and/or vary the speed (flow rate) for pump over. US-FIP will provide units wired and programmed to meet your needs.
