Moonshine - market demand?

I've seen a lot of buzz about new craft moonshine distilleries - are there actually customers who will want to buy it in California?

A great resource for you is the book Start Your Own Microbrewery, Distillery, or Cider by Entrepreneur & Corie Brown. It addresses this question and is very inightful. In short, according to the latest statistics no market is considered "saturated" yet in terms of craft spirits because demand is so high. Even California. Even moonshine. Your idea sounds like one you should pursue. Good luck!

California is definitely an emerging market for moonshine. Moonshine and white whiskey have both gained a lot of press among the mainstream in the past six or seven years due to all the media glamorizing the prohibition-era. While one might not typically consider San Francisco or Los Angeles yuppies part of the target market for moonshine, the runaway success of shows like 'Boardwalk Empire' has expanded the market to include such groups. Speakeasy-styled bars and lounges have become popular in most major cities, including those in California, and it has also become somewhat of a trend to have "dress up" parties where attendees wear classic suits, dresses, and hats reminiscent of the 1920s and 30s. At such parties, moonshine is usually the liquor of choice.

There is a definite demand for classic liquors in California.
