The cooperatives help their members improve efficiency through innovative milking systems, herd management and better feeding techniques. This increases the yield per cow, and improves animal health and milk quality. The larger, efficient dairy cooperatives are in a better position to secure lucrative supply contracts with manufacturers and large supermarket retailers. These large contracts guarantee a consistent level of demand for milk production and a reliable stream of income for dairy farmers. For individual farmers, larger farms are more price-competitive due to their lower costs from economies of scale.
