Glycol can be ethylene glycol or propylene glycol. Propylene glycol is recommended for glycol chillers. Additionally, it is important to note that it is advised to use a USP food grade propylene glycol as opposed to a tech/industrial grade propylene glycol in a glycol chiller to reduce risk of contamination/toxicity.

The 2 different types of glycol are ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. While ethylene glycol is more effective as an antifreeze, propylene glycol is the preferred type to use in a glycol chiller due to the fact that it is much less toxic than ethylene glycol.
