Functionally, gear driven slicers tend to be more durable and require less maintenance over time. On the other hand, in the event that repairs are necessary, the gear driven slicer is more complicated and costs more to repair. Belt driven slicers are usually a better choice if you're not prepared to maintain your slicers carefully and pay out in the event of a big repair.
