What's the difference between a volumetric filling machine and a liquid level filling machine?

Aha! A very common question. When you think about setting up a beverage production system, you need to think about your final product in the bottle and ask yourself this question- do I want the fill-level to appear the same for all bottles, or do I want the exact volume of liquid in each bottle to be the same? This is an important distinction to make, because most bottles have minor variations in volume, even if they're all the same shape and same specified volume (e.g. if you buy 10,000 22oz bottles, they will not all be "exactly" 22oz in size).

Volumetric filling machines are designed to fill bottles with an "exact" volume of liquid, regardless of what the final fill-level looks like in the bottle. Liquid-level filling machines, on the other hand, are designed to fill bottles up to a specified level, even if the exact volume of liquid in each bottle is not the same.

We would add is that a level filling machine is usually lower in price than an volumetric filler for a given production speed. They are very flexible when filling many different containers.

Level fillers are used for low viscosity products (less than 17000 cps) such as alcohol, water, juice, brine, perfume, wood stain, anti-freeze or soy sauce. They are especially useful with foaming products such as glass cleaner as they remove the foam to a side tank allowing a much faster fill. The foam settles out and is returned to the fill side.

For filling beer you want the industry standard which is a fill to level filler.

A volumetric filler is a positive dispacement filler which will give you great accuracy and can be used for more viscous products then liquid level filler but you may need to purchase a few different size pistons depending on the different size containers your filling. A liquid level filling machine uses your container to set the fill level and will give you a cosmetic fill where the bottle fill will look the same but may vary from bottle to bottle. When filling glass bottles I would recommend using a liquid level filling machine because the variation of the bottles can be so great that the fill levels on a volumetric filling machine can overfill the bottle or look so different that a consumer may not purchase the product.

A volumetric filling machine is equipped with the ability to adjust or set the volumes for accuracy while filling. For example if the volume is adjusted at 6oz it stops filling at the 6oz adjustment. A liquid level filling machine insures the same level on multiple bottles in a line.
