Neither are necessarily "better" than the other. Keep in mind that direct thermal machines tend to be cheaper (both initial cost, and cost of operation and materials), which may make it "better" for you, depending on your specific use-case. Thermal transfer machines are more expensive, but because they use a wax and/or resin ribbon (instead of thermal paper) to burn symbols and characters into the labeling tape, the labels tend to be quite resistant to damage and last for a long time. Direct thermal machines create labels with a lifespan of only about a year, maximum.
